A sales rep closes a deal in Salesforce. Operations needs to fulfill it in SAP. Between those two events sits the most expensive gap in enterprise operations.

The canonical schema is the key insight. You do not map Salesforce directly to SAP. You map both to a shared intermediate model. When you add a third system -- a procurement platform, a billing tool -- you write one new adapter instead of rebuilding every integration.

Every extracted field carries a confidence score. A customer name matched at 0.99 passes through automatically. A product mapped at 0.82 routes to a human reviewer. This confidence-based validation eliminates false positives without requiring manual review of every record.

How 3-Way Matching Works in Production

The handoff does not end when the sales order creates in SAP. The most valuable automation happens downstream, when invoices need to be matched against what was ordered and received.

The self-healing service deserves a note. When order creation fails due to a transient SAP error -- locked record, timeout, validation glitch -- the system diagnoses, corrects, and retries. Most teams build retry loops that hammer the same failed request. Self-healing reads the error and adjusts before retrying.

Design Rules From Production

Six rules from watching handoffs fail in production:

  1. Validate before pushing. Run every check on the CRM side before sending anything to the ERP. Failed orders in SAP create cleanup work. Failed validations in a queue create a fixable exception.

  2. Never create partial records. If line item 3 of 5 fails, create nothing. A partial order in SAP is worse than no order -- operations will start fulfilling incomplete information.

  3. Keep both systems authoritative for their domain. Salesforce owns relationships, deal context, and committed pricing. SAP owns inventory, fulfillment, and financials. A knowledge graph maintains entity relationships across systems -- companies, people, transactions, contracts -- so neither stores the other's data.

  4. Maintain crosswalk tables as living data. Product, customer, and terms mappings live as master data, not hardcoded logic. New SKUs update the crosswalk. The integration adapts without code changes.

  5. Log every transformation with confidence scores. "Enterprise License - Annual" to MAT-EL-001 at 0.98 confidence -- log it. Quantity rounded from 4.7 to 5 -- log the rule. These are how you debug discrepancies when finance asks questions six months later.

  6. Account classification drives routing. Cost center assignment, GL mapping, and journal entry creation follow rules from transaction type and entity classification. New business units inherit routing automatically from the account hierarchy.
